SR&ED and Patent Specialist

The kind of things you'd be doing:

SR&ED

  • Develop strategies and processes to support the identification and tracking of SR&ED eligible projects
  • Engage with IT and financial team members to gather supporting evidence, such as invoices, T4s, logged hours, etc.
  • Prepare and present SR&ED and other reports for internal review; including technical and financial aspects in accordance with Revenue Canada
  • Prepare and coordinate any efforts required to ensure proper filing of SR&ED claims
  • Act as the subject matter expert (SME) for SR&ED and its processes within the company
  • Provide regular SR&ED training and information sessions to new and existing employees
  • Identify and capture unexercised tax credit opportunities

Patents

  • Develop and protect the company’s intellectual property including patents, trade secrets, trademarks, etc.
  • Conduct intellectual property searches in support of new product development
  • Research and analyze the impact of new technologies, market developments and foreign patent filing by other companies
  • Engage with engineering teams to decide whether new technologies should be patented
  • Write and manage the delivery of patent applications
  • Correspond with lawyers and manage the company’s intellectual property files and present/support internal and external audits when needed
  • Maintain a well-organized internal library of IP-related documents in paper and digital forms
  • Ensure trademarks are used properly, and help determine when licenses should be pursued

Skills and Qualifications:

  • 5+ years in a corporate tax environment, if accounting-related
  • Experience with preparation of SR&ED claims including costing, form preparation and review is a strong asset
  • Experience with preparation of completion of corporate tax returns
  • Post-secondary education in accounting OR degree in engineering, software or IT related
  • Graduate degree an asset
  • Superior communication skills, oral and written; ability to convey technical matters
  • Excellent textual knowledge and comparison skills; ability to check through typed material with attention to work usage, placement, and changes between documents
  • Familiar with the IT industry
  • Patent agent or in-depth knowledge of intellectual property
  • High proficiency in Excel
